Why a Master of Health Studies (MHS)

My journey to pursue a MHS is rooted in my desire to achieve higher learning and greater breadth and depth of healthcare knowledge. I am drawn to the program because it offers a broad leadership and health promotion focus with a specialization in teaching.  The dynamic and changing environment within healthcare requires up-to-date knowledge of current issues and trends which I feel can be gained from this degree. The courses offered closely align with my professional development interests and I am eager to bring my learning to practice. Furthermore, the interprofessional nature of the program is an added benefit, bringing together professionals from various health disciplines and enriching the peer learning experience.

Professionally, my focus is on improving quality of life and well-being of older adults through self-management of health, agency, autonomy, and independent living within their communities. I believe in advocating for seniors’ specific health and social care issues.  Through the health promotion course series, I hope to gain valuable knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and models/frameworks to analyze health issues and inform action. Furthermore, I am interested in the teaching specialization courses to increase my knowledge of learning models, best practices for engaging the learner as well as teaching and learning in both a clinical and community health setting. Most importantly, completing a MHS will give me a competitive edge and prepare me to address the higher-level issues within healthcare.
